It’s not the first time Donald Trump Jr’s hunting pursuits have made headlines, but this latest claim has sparked a new wave of outrage among conservationists. Videos circulating online purportedly show him on a hunting trip in the scenic Venice lagoon, where he appears to take down several ducks from a foxhole.
According to Ajit Niranjan, Europe environment correspondent, and other reports, local officials say one of the birds featured in the footage is a ruddy shelduck—an uncommon species in the region that is protected by the EU birds directive and Italian law. Often called the Brahminy duck, this distinctively rust-colored waterfowl migrates across Asia and parts of southeast Europe. Although not globally endangered, experts stress that ongoing habitat loss and shifting weather patterns threaten its future breeding grounds.
Italian regional councillor Andrea Zanoni has alleged the duck’s killing took place in a special conservation area near Venice. He questioned the legality of Trump Jr’s actions and called for official sanctions against any license holders who granted permission for the hunt. Meanwhile, Massimo Buconi of the Italian Hunting Federation noted that hunting foreign visitors can obtain valid permits, but confirmed that shooting this protected bird would break Italian law if confirmed.
Beyond the legal wrangling, many eco-conscious observers say the incident highlights a troubling disregard for wildlife protections. While the hunting party’s video voiceover claimed they respected local environments, images of a deceased protected species tell a different story.
It’s up to each of us to speak out when powerful figures appear to flout Conservation laws. By supporting wildlife organizations, sharing verified information on social media, and urging stricter enforcement of protections, we can make sure no species—rare or otherwise—slips through the cracks for the sake of a trophy.
