The Susquehanna SPCA and the New York State Police held a press conference to reveal disturbing details about a severe animal cruelty case in New Berlin. The investigation, which began with a search warrant executed on April 26 at Clark Lane and Pig Farm Lane, uncovered a horrific scene of neglect and abuse.
Stacie Haynes, the executive director of the Susquehanna SPCA, described the grim discovery. “It wasn’t hard to determine what we were going to face because there were dead animals right near the road. There were a handful of dead animals in the creek when you walked up to the home. We only had to take a couple steps before we saw animals that were sick and suffering,” Haynes stated.
State Police Captain Marc Barbera indicated that the scale of the neglect suggested it had been ongoing for years. “People were telling us that in the summertime when it gets warm especially, that they would take alternate routes. Like, if they were going into town or going back to their homes, so they would not have to go past that farm,” he explained.
In total, authorities seized 107 animals from the property and discovered two dozen dead animals, alongside a graveyard of bones. Barbera recounted the tragic decline of what was once a prosperous pig farm, linked to a fire and a subsequent death in the family, which precipitated the neglect.
Four individuals now face serious charges in connection with the case. Dominick E. Brown, 44, is charged with nine counts of aggravated cruelty to animals (a class “E” felony) and 95 counts of misdemeanor animal torture and neglect. Jane M. Richards, 74, faces the same felony charges and 87 misdemeanor counts. Helen F. Goude, 56, and Katheriena M. Goude, 60, are each charged with two counts of aggravated cruelty and three counts of misdemeanor neglect.
Despite the overwhelming evidence, Barbera noted that the owners were not willing to surrender the animals, maintaining they were adequately cared for. All four suspects are scheduled for arraignment at the Town of New Berlin Court on May 22 at 9 a.m.
