Travelers arriving at Portland International Airport (PDX) will soon find themselves in a unique setting that brings the beauty of the Pacific Northwest indoors. The newly renovated main terminal, which reopened on Wednesday after a $2.15 billion renovation, features an impressive forest theme.
The terminal’s design includes live trees, plants, and natural light streaming through a wooden roof, creating the illusion of a forest canopy. By the end of construction, over 5,000 plants will adorn the space, enhancing the forest-like atmosphere. Additionally, 49 skylights will provide natural illumination, reducing the need for artificial lighting and cutting energy use by half.
The terminal’s design aims to create a calming experience for travelers, reflecting the region’s natural beauty. All the wood used in the construction is sourced from within 300 miles of the airport, and the ceiling materials come from certified sustainable forests.
In keeping with the outdoor theme, the airport will continue its pet therapy program, featuring occasional visits from llamas and alpacas to soothe travelers. The TSA checkpoints have also been upgraded, with two video walls displaying Pacific Northwest-inspired scenes that change based on real-time data, including time and weather.
The renovation, which includes a second phase starting August 15, will see the addition of permanent exit lanes, meet-and-greet areas, and more local shops and restaurants.
