Roxanne McKinnon of Manchester, United Kingdom, has shared her unique solution to help ease her rescue dog Ranger’s anxious behavior. Just a few months after welcoming Ranger, a German shepherd and setter mix, into her home in 2022, McKinnon faced a harrowing situation when an intoxicated intruder trespassed into their residence during the early hours of the morning. Ranger’s vigilant barking alerted McKinnon and her husband to the intruder’s presence, ultimately leading to the man’s apprehension by the police.
The traumatic incident left Ranger understandably on edge, exhibiting signs of extreme protectiveness over his home. Each evening, Ranger would diligently patrol the yard, a manifestation of his lingering anxiety stemming from the intrusion. Recognizing the toll that trauma had taken on Ranger, McKinnon embarked on a journey to alleviate his stress. Despite numerous attempts at desensitization, Ranger remained on high alert—until McKinnon stumbled upon a brilliant solution on social media.

Inspired by a clever hack shared online, McKinnon devised a plan to create a hole in the fence, allowing Ranger to survey the adjacent public field from the comfort of his own yard. McKinnon and her husband constructed a timber frame around the hole, ensuring Ranger’s safety while affording him a newfound sense of security.
Dubbed the “patrol hole,” Ranger’s new vantage point has become a sanctuary of sorts, where he can survey his surroundings without the heightened anxiety that once plagued him. McKinnon’s TikTok video detailing the creation of the hole has garnered widespread attention, with viewers praising her innovative approach to addressing her dog’s anxiety.
