If you have ever filled a cup from the galley tap, this might change your routine. According to Ben Schlappig at One Mile at a Time, a new report graded US airlines on the quality of water stored in onboard tanks. The tank water is used for lavatory sinks and for brewing coffee or tea.

The researchers looked at more than 35,000 samples over a three year period, from October 2022 through September 2025. They created a Water Safety Score from 0.00 to 5.00 using measures like violations per aircraft, maximum contaminant level violations for E. coli, public notices, and how often systems are disinfected and flushed. Because water touches so many surfaces, it is also a basic public health issue.

The results were not close. Delta scored a perfect 5.00, while Frontier scored 4.80. Alaska came in at 3.85. On the other end, American scored 1.75, with JetBlue at 1.80 and Spirit at 2.05. That gap should not exist in 2026, when clean water should be routine. In practice, the report advises passengers to avoid tank water unless it is in a sealed bottle, and to skip onboard coffee and tea. It even suggests sanitizer over sink washing on some flights, which feels bleak.

Still, this is not just a travel cringe story. When people feel forced to buy more single use bottled water, the waste can harm animals and pollute the environment. So the real fix should be upstream. Airlines can publish cleaning schedules, invest in better filtration, and treat compliance as a public trust. Regulators can also enforce the Aircraft Drinking Water Rule and make penalties visible to the public. This matters for crews, too.

As travelers, we can bring a reusable bottle, pack vegan and plant based snacks, and keep pushing for cleaner systems that protect the Earth.
