According to Gary Fuller at The Guardian, staying inside can feel like a break from dirty outdoor air, especially around the holidays. Yet the air in your own living room can change fast, because we make Pollution indoors and then trap it.

We already know secondhand smoke hurts health. A review called Cardiovascular Events Following Smoke Free Legislations looked at 47 public smoking bans and found heart attack admissions fell, on average, after bans took effect. But smoke is not the only problem.

Researchers tracking real households are finding big spikes from everyday routines. In the study Indoor Air Pollution from Residential Stoves, sensors followed 20 homes that used government approved wood stoves. The sharpest jumps often came when people lit the fire, opened the door, and refuelled. Smoke can also drift to neighbours, which is why councils get thousands of complaints each year.

Cooking can be even more constant. The INGENIOUS project measured air Pollution in 310 homes in Bradford and linked the highest particle levels to cooking, with frying a big driver. So the simple rule helps: pan on, fan on. Turn on the extractor, crack a window, and keep air moving when you cook, clean, or use scented sprays. If you do not have an extractor, a window and a desk fan still help.

If you burn wood, treat it like a smoke source, not a cosy heater. Refuel less, open the door slowly, and skip fires on still days. Keep children and anyone with lung or heart issues out of the room. These choices also protect animals who share our homes.

Finally, think about what you cook. More plant based meals that rely on simmering or baking can mean less high heat frying. Small habits add up, so let’s keep indoor air cleaner for the sake of the environment and everyone breathing it.
