Born Free USA, a prominent wildlife conservation and animal advocacy nonprofit, has unveiled a damning report titled “Clawing at the Cages: Big Cats in Zoos.” This comprehensive study delves into the plight of big cats held in captivity across North America, shedding light on the stark realities of their existence within zoo environments.
The report, drawing from case studies and independent analysis of zoo databases, presents a sobering overview of the exploitation and suffering experienced by big cats in captivity. While encompassing a range of species including lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars, cheetahs, and mountain lions, it underscores the shared fate of these majestic creatures.
Among the report’s key findings are distressing revelations. Despite the precarious status of many big cat species in the wild, zoos persist in housing and breeding thousands of these animals with little intention of ever releasing them. Shockingly, many big cats succumb to captivity-related causes such as infections, injuries inflicted by enclosure companions, and high rates of infant mortality.
Equally alarming is the absence of a distinction between humane euthanasia and the indiscriminate killing of healthy animals for zoo management purposes. Zoos worldwide have resorted to culling healthy big cats due to overcrowding, perceived lack of breeding utility, enclosure failures, or conflicts with conspecifics.
Moreover, the report exposes the inherent welfare issues faced by big cats in captivity. Inbreeding and habituation to human presence render them unsuitable for release into the wild, perpetuating a cycle of breeding programs aimed solely at stocking zoo populations. The monitoring of captive big cat populations is also plagued by incomplete data, with individuals frequently disappearing from studbooks.
Angela Grimes, CEO of Born Free USA, laments these animals’ profound suffering: “In addition to their vital ecological function as apex predators and their inherent value as individuals with rich lives, they also occupy an important symbolic place in many cultures and religions. It is perhaps because of our fascination with these animals — who are the epitome of what it means to be ‘wild’ — that they are some of the most commonly kept animals in zoos. These complex, intelligent, strong, wide-ranging, and long-lived animals experience lives in captivity in which their most fundamental needs are denied to fulfill our frivolous desire to see them for a fleeting moment, before going about our days.”
Furthermore, the report casts a critical eye on facilities engaging in risky interactions with big cats, often flouting safety regulations. Despite the enactment of the Big Cat Public Safety Act of 2023, numerous unaccredited facilities continue to subject both animals and visitors to perilous conditions. In response to these harrowing revelations, Born Free USA calls for immediate action to phase out the breeding and exhibition of big cats in zoos. They urge the public to abstain from patronizing venues that perpetuate this exploitation.
