A sweeping proposal to expand offshore drilling under Donald Trump could trigger thousands of oil spills across US waters and push already vulnerable marine species closer to extinction. According to Teresa Tomassoni at Inside Climate News, a new analysis from the Center for Biological Diversity warns the plan could result in more than four thousand oil spills over the next five years.

The proposal would open vast stretches of federal waters in the Gulf of Mexico, off California, and along Alaska’s coast to new oil and gas leasing. That scale of expansion goes far beyond recent drilling programs. As a result, researchers estimate more than twelve million gallons of crude could be released into sensitive marine areas, including places that have never been drilled before.

History shows why this matters. After the Deepwater Horizon disaster, which spilled more than two hundred million gallons of oil, tens of thousands of birds, sea turtles, dolphins, and other marine animals were poisoned or killed. Endangered Rice’s whales, found only in the Gulf of Mexico, have struggled to recover ever since. Today fewer than fifty remain.

Increased drilling also threatens broader wildlife and coastal communities. The Gulf is already crowded with rigs, pipelines, and shipping traffic. Oil spills do not stay put either. Ocean current modeling shows slicks can travel hundreds of miles, reaching beaches and fragile wetlands that Support entire ecosystems.

Alaska faces even higher risks. Remote Arctic waters, extreme weather, and long periods of darkness make cleanup efforts slow or impossible. A major spill there could permanently damage fisheries and marine habitats that many communities depend on for food and livelihoods.

At a time when cleaner energy options and plant-based living can reduce pressure on the environment, expanding offshore drilling moves in the wrong direction. Protecting the Earth means choosing policies that value life, health, and long term resilience over short term profit.
