Air quality across large parts of the United States has reached dangerous levels this week, with millions of Americans in Texas and several neighboring states advised to take precautions. According to Newsweek, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued air quality alerts on Wednesday for Texas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky.

The warnings stem from elevated ground-level ozone and particulate matter concentrations, which pose serious risks to health. Children, seniors, and people with preexisting respiratory or heart conditions are especially vulnerable. Officials urged sensitive groups to reduce outdoor exertion while alerts remain in effect.

In Texas, ozone action days were declared for Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Galveston, and Brazoria. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality asked residents to reduce Pollution by walking, biking, taking public transit, carpooling, or simply packing lunch instead of driving out for food. Avoiding drive-through lanes, conserving energy, and tuning up vehicles were also suggested.

Similar alerts were issued across Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois, and Missouri, covering major metro areas like Memphis, Indianapolis, Louisville, and St. Louis. Agencies recommended delaying the use of gas-powered lawn equipment, reducing vehicle idling, and refueling cars later in the evening to limit emissions.

Experts emphasize the broader consequences of these warnings. Jonathan Grigg, professor of pediatric respiratory and environmental medicine at Queen Mary University of London, noted that fine particles are linked to premature death from respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Developing lungs in children face even greater risks.

Air quality alerts highlight the urgent need to tackle the root causes of Pollution: fossil fuel dependence, industrial emissions, and unchecked sprawl. Choosing cleaner transport, conserving energy, and shifting toward plant-based lifestyles can all help reduce the burden on the air we breathe.

Protecting the Earth means protecting ourselves. Small steps, multiplied across millions of people, can clear the skies and safeguard future generations. Every choice matters—let’s choose clean air.
