Barbie Dolls

Toy company Mattel, Inc. announced a goal to have 100% recycled, recyclable or bio-based plastics in products and packaging by 2030. According to a company press release, the first toy to meet this goal will be the Fisher-Price®Rock-a-Stack® that will be made from sugar-cane plastics and packaged in 100% recycled or sustainably sourced materials.

Mattel is known for brands including Barbie, Hot Wheels, Fisher-Price and MEGA. In 2011, Mattel announced Environmental Sustainable Sourcing Principles and since then the company now has 93% of its paper and wood fiber sourced from Forest Stewardship Council content.

The company’s Chairman and CEO Ynon Kreiz said of the new initiative, “Environmental sustainability is a corporate priority at Mattel and creating sustainable products and packaging is an important part of our commitment to the planet. Our dedicated cross-functional team made sustainability a key priority throughout the product and packaging design and production process. Today, we are delivering on that priority by announcing our first product made from sustainable materials and we look forward to expanding our efforts to all Mattel brands.”

The plastics crisis continues to be an issue for companies and consumers alike. Plant-based plastics are better because they require less fossil fuels in manufacturing, but are not biodegradable. According to National Geographic, 91% of plastic isn’t recycled, which means in ends up in landfills or oceans.
