A 27-year-old Glasgow man, Mohammad Tofiq Sadiq, has been banned from keeping animals for five years. This ruling comes in response to Sadiq’s failure to provide proper care for his dog, Kilo, following an illegal ear-cropping procedure. The Glasgow Sheriff Court also handed him a 12-month community payback order for neglecting to seek veterinary treatment for the injuries inflicted on the five-month-old American pocket bully.

Ear cropping, a practice deemed illegal in the UK, involves the removal of a dog’s ear flaps for cosmetic purposes. Although it is against the law to perform such procedures within the country, it is not illegal to sell or import dogs that have undergone ear-cropping. The British Veterinary Association condemns ear cropping as a form of “mutilation,” emphasizing the pain and suffering it causes to the animals involved.
The case against Sadiq began when the Scottish SPCA launched an investigation in April 2022 following a tip to its helpline. Upon arriving at Sadiq’s residence, inspectors discovered Kilo with cropped ears that were described as “red and scabby.” Sadiq claimed that he had owned the dog for only nine days and that the ear-cropping had been done by the previous owner. However, when questioned about veterinary care, Sadiq admitted to treating Kilo’s wounds with paracetamol and salty water.
Concerned for Kilo’s well-being, the Scottish SPCA removed the dog from Sadiq’s premises and took him to a vet for a thorough examination. The wounds were found to be fresh, indicating that the illegal procedure had been performed within the last seven to 10 days. The vet administered anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce swelling and alleviate the pain caused by the injuries. Kilo was then transferred to an animal rescue and rehoming center for ongoing medical care.
Sadiq pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to Kilo and was sentenced at the Glasgow Sheriff Court last month. In addition to the 12-month community payback order, he received a five-year disqualification from keeping animals. The Scottish SPCA inspector involved in the case expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision, stating that it reflects Sadiq’s “blatant disregard for Kilo’s welfare.”
