Madison Alder Lindsay Lemmer said, “Today, every cat in Madison lands on its feet as we set an example for the rest of the state and join the numerous cities throughout the country that have already banned this archaic practice.”
Cat declawing may seem fairly innocent to those who do not know what it is. Many think it only involves removing the nails. However, declawing is much much worse and very painful, as it involves removing the top bone of each toe. This is the equivalent of chopping off the fingers on a person’s hand at the first knuckle.
Declawing cats is a procedure designed to make the cats’ owners’ lives easier at the price of their cats’ well-being. It is extremely cruel and needs to be completely banned. Hopefully, other states and cities will follow Madison’s lead in this step forward for animal welfare.
