Lake Tahoe Welcomes Candela’s Hydrofoil Electric Ferry in Sustainability Push

Candela, a trailblazer in electric boat manufacturing from Sweden, has made a significant splash with its latest innovation—the P-12 hydrofoil electric ferry. This vessel is the first of its kind to enter the US market, promising a greener, faster, and smoother way to traverse Lake Tahoe.

The P-12 ferry utilizes advanced hydrofoil technology developed by Candela, which allows the vessel to ‘fly’ above the water at speeds of 25 knots (30 mph). This not only enhances the travel experience by reducing wave-induced motion but also improves energy efficiency. The hydrofoil design enables the use of smaller, lighter batteries that can be recharged rapidly, cutting down on both cost and environmental impact.

Recently, Candela celebrated the launch of the P-12 in Stockholm, and now Lake Tahoe is set to benefit from this cutting-edge technology. The introduction of the P-12 ferry in this region is aimed at reducing travel times for both locals and visitors, providing a vital north-south link across the lake and supporting efforts to preserve its iconic cobalt-blue clarity.

FlyTahoe, a local company, will operate the new ferry service, significantly reducing the current travel time. What typically takes over two hours by road during the winter months will now be a swift 30-minute journey by water, offering a quicker alternative to the daily 20,000 car trips along the same route.

This initiative not only promises to ease traffic congestion but also addresses environmental concerns. “It’s ironic that while millions drive around Lake Tahoe to admire its beauty, the road sediment we generate contributes to the largest threat to the lake’s clarity,” said Ryan Meinzer, Founder & CEO of FlyTahoe. He added, “Our service will provide faster transport than cars or buses, while keeping Tahoe blue.”

Simultaneously, back in Sweden, Candela announced a successful $14 million funding round in its Series C investments, with contributions from global entities like SEB Private Equity. This influx of funds will Support Candela’s ongoing mission to expand its zero-emission fleet, marking a significant step towards revolutionizing waterborne transport with sustainability at the forefront.
