An innovative electric scooter, the Lightfoot, is set to hit the market with a feature that could change urban commuting: solar charging. Developed by Otherlab, this scooter is equipped with two large solar panels designed to boost its range, generating extra miles simply by being left in sunlight. For each hour of sunlight exposure, the Lightfoot can add up to three miles to its battery range, making it a compelling option for eco-conscious commuters.

Priced at $4,995, the Lightfoot is now available for preorder and is expected to be delivered as early as January 2025. Powering the scooter is a set of dual 750W brushless DC motors and a 48-volt, 1.1 kWh battery, which provides a range of about 37 miles on a full charge. With a top speed of just under 20 mph, this scooter offers a blend of performance and sustainability. Though there are cargo e-bikes with similar or greater ranges at a lower price, Lightfoot stands out for its ability to recharge directly from sunlight, reducing dependency on external power sources.

The solar panels on the Lightfoot’s frame can also generate up to 120 watts while exposed to sunlight. Under favorable conditions, these panels could add up to 20 miles of range in the summer and 10 miles in the winter, offering a convenient boost for longer trips. While some compact scooters can be stored indoors, this model is specifically designed to stay outdoors, making use of sunlight for passive charging.

Built from durable aircraft-grade aluminum, the Lightfoot is designed to handle urban terrain with its sturdy 10-inch tires. It has enough space for two riders and offers 1.5 cubic feet of lockable, weatherproof storage—perfect for city dwellers who need to stash personal items securely. Unlike some high-tech models, the Lightfoot uses standard parts, focusing on low maintenance and ease of repair.

For commuters looking to avoid range anxiety, the Lightfoot provides peace of mind. Its ability to harness solar power means riders don’t have to worry as much about running out of battery, and it also allows for less frequent stops at charging stations. Though it’s not foldable like some other scooters, it’s designed to be left outside, making the most of every sunny day.
