Manufactured by Swedish-Kenyan company Roam, the Roam Air surpassed significant milestones during its journey. While the current world record for the longest electric motorcycle trip stands at 25,000 kilometers in the United States, Roam’s 3,700-mile trek demonstrates that solar power can effectively Support extensive travel even where charging infrastructure is limited. The motorcycle achieved a new single battery range of 113 kilometers and covered 1,000 kilometers in less than 18 hours on the final day of the trip.

The expedition was meticulously planned, with a Support vehicle equipped with solar panels driving ahead each day to recharge the motorcycle’s batteries. This allowed the team to swap depleted batteries for fully charged ones, ensuring continuous progress. Riders Masa Kituyi, Roam’s product owner, and Stephan Lacock from Stellenbosch University navigated diverse terrains across Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, and Botswana, highlighting the bike’s versatility and reliability.

One of the main challenges faced was unpredictable weather, particularly cloud cover, which required route adjustments to maintain consistent solar charging. Despite these obstacles, the journey proved that with careful planning and access to basic charging points, long-distance solar-powered travel is feasible.

This achievement aligns with the growing African electric vehicle (EV) market, valued at $16 billion and expected to reach $25 billion by 2029. Governments across the continent, such as Rwanda with its incentives for EV adoption, are driving this expansion. Roam’s collaboration with Stellenbosch University’s Electric Mobility Lab further supports advancements in sustainable transport solutions.

Roam aims to build trust in electric vehicles through such pioneering efforts, demonstrating that renewable energy can power the future of mobility in Africa and beyond.
