Aptera Motors, a San Diego-based innovator, has reached a groundbreaking milestone with the successful completion of its first low-speed test for the PI2, a fully solar-powered electric vehicle (sEV). Unlike conventional electric cars, the Aptera PI2 harnesses solar energy directly, eliminating the need to plug in for daily recharges.

The PI2, short for “Production Intent,” was evaluated in a minimal state, stripping away non-essential parts such as body panels, doors, windows, and the high-voltage system to focus on its core functionality. Aptera’s design integrates approximately 700 watts of solar cells over 32 square feet of the vehicle, enabling it to generate an additional 40 miles of range each day solely from sunlight. This efficiency is achieved through a lightweight build and an impressive drag coefficient of 0.13, positioning the PI2 among the most aerodynamically efficient vehicles available.

Aptera offers multiple battery pack options, with the highest configuration delivering up to 1,000 miles of range on a full charge. For extended drives or cloudy days, the vehicle can still be plugged in to recharge its batteries. The Launch Edition, starting at $30,700, features a 42 kWh lithium-ion battery and offers a 400-mile range per charge, rivaling models like the Tesla Model S Long Range.

Founded in 2008, Aptera initially developed prototypes achieving up to 300 MPG before pausing operations in 2011. Revived in 2019 by Steve Fambro and Chris Anthony, the company is now ramping up production with a goal of manufacturing 40 vehicles daily from its Carlsbad, California facility.

Beyond its solar capabilities, the Aptera PI2 boasts impressive performance metrics, including a 0-60 mph time of four seconds and a top speed of 101 mph. The minimalist interior and advanced aerodynamics underscore Aptera’s commitment to sustainable transportation without compromising on speed or efficiency. As the automotive industry shifts towards eco-friendly solutions, Aptera stands out as a leader in innovative, solar-powered mobility.
