A dangerous fungal threat has been detected in California, posing a significant risk to the state’s diverse bat population. Recent testing by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) found Pseudogymnoascus destructans, the fungus responsible for white-nose syndrome, in bats across five counties. White-nose syndrome, a deadly disease for bats, has killed millions of the animals across North America. Although none of California’s bats have shown symptoms of the disease so far, the presence of the fungus signals a concerning possibility of future outbreaks among the state’s 25 native bat species.
White-nose syndrome often appears as a white fuzz on infected bats’ noses, a sign of fungal growth that damages their wings and weakens them during hibernation by depleting vital fat reserves. Bats with the syndrome frequently suffer dehydration and loss of energy, leading to high mortality rates. “It’s possible for bats to have the fungus and never become symptomatic to the disease, which is the curious part about this whole disease progression,” said Katrina Smith, a senior environmental scientist at CDFW. She noted that wing damage, such as tissue tears or holes, usually indicates the disease has taken hold.
Currently, bats testing positive for the fungus in California show no visible signs of infection, and their wings remain healthy. However, several species, like the little brown bat and Yuma myotis, appear to carry and potentially spread the fungus. CDFW first identified the fungus in Humboldt County in 2023; it has since been found in Amador, Placer, Sutter, and Inyo counties. Preliminary findings also suggest the fungus may be present in Alpine, Plumas, and San Diego counties, among others.
In response to the potential spread of white-nose syndrome, state and federal agencies have crafted strategies to combat the disease and Support bat populations. Possible interventions include experimental vaccines, probiotic treatments, and native plant restorations to provide ample insect food sources for bats before and after hibernation. Despite these efforts, CDFW’s Smith warns that managing the disease is challenging. The risks are considerable: “The worst case scenario would be that all of those myotis bats are very susceptible and succumb to the disease,” Smith said. Losing bat populations would have far-reaching effects on California’s ecosystems, as bats help control insect populations, including pests that harm agriculture.
Though white-nose syndrome does not affect humans, pets, or other animals, the impact on bats could disrupt the ecological balance, underscoring the urgent need for solutions to protect these essential creatures.
