California City Takes a Stand Against “Torture Breeding” of Dogs

Ojai, California, has banned “torture breeding,” a practice that forces animals to endure a lifetime of pain for the sake of specific physical traits. This new law, the first of its kind in the United States, aims to stop the deliberate breeding of animals like French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs, pugs, Persian cats, and other breeds prone to significant health issues due to their unique features.

Last week, the Ojai City Council voted to adopt this companion animal protection ordinance, targeting breeds that suffer due to traits such as flattened faces and other exaggerated features. According to PETA, these animals often experience respiratory distress, joint problems, and other painful conditions throughout their lives. “I’m thrilled that Ojai is setting a new national standard for protecting dogs and cats from being bred to suffer,” remarked Ojai Mayor Betsy Stix, encouraging other cities to consider similar actions for the welfare of animals.

This ordinance provides relief for breeds beyond bulldogs and pugs. Breeds like Persian and Scottish Fold cats, as well as Dachshunds and boxers, will also be protected under this new regulation. According to Tracy Reiman, PETA’s executive vice president, Ojai’s leaders are taking a strong stand against breeding practices that result in lifelong suffering. She emphasized the importance of adopting animals from shelters rather than purchasing pets with breathing or other health impairments.

The ordinance has also gotten Support from the international veterinary community. Emma Milne, founder of Vets Against Brachycephalism, stressed that the extreme physical traits bred into certain animals cause suffering comparable to physical abuse. “This suffering is as severe as that inflicted by physical abuse, and Ojai has made the right decision in choosing to no longer tolerate it,” she said. Milne’s organization, which represents veterinarians from over 60 countries, advocates for ethical standards in animal breeding to prioritize health and quality of life.
