Bulldogs and French bulldogs have become super popular in the United States due to their distinctive appearance and unique charm. However, recent evidence suggests that the very features that make these breeds iconic also contribute to severe health complications in many dogs. Chronic inbreeding and the exaggerated body shape characteristic of bulldogs have raised concerns about the welfare of these beloved pets. From respiratory issues stemming from their flattened faces to skin infections and spinal problems, bulldogs face a myriad of health challenges.

For an English Bulldog, the life expectancy is surprisingly low at just 8 years. They have a myriad of health issues and these affect nearly every English Bulldog. Their short face, caused by inbreeding, makes it difficult for them to get air. In turn, this can cause sinus infections and make it difficult for them to exercise. Some may have such a hard time getting air, that surgery is necessary. Skin infections are common for English Bulldogs because their skin folds, also caused by inbreeding, are a breeding ground for bacteria. It is also common for this breed of dog to get “cherry eye”. This is when the tear duct prolapses and surgery is required to fix it. They can also have hip and joint issues.

This vet not only shows skulls compared to brachycephalic dogs (like bulldogs) but also discusses how by buying these breeds from a breeder, you are supporting an unethical practice. From inbreeding, these breeds have been made so the structure of their skull does not Support breathing properly which can cause heatstroke. She ends the video with an important question, “why potentially sacrifice the health of your dog for looks?”

An extreme increase in French Bulldogs at shelters in England raises the question of banning bulldog breeding altogether. As people in the U.K. buy these breeds on a whim, they grow to understand the severe health complications of brachycephalic dogs and end up returning them to a shelter.

One-year-old Enzo is about to have surgery that is necessary to save his life. Like many flat-faced dogs, he has extremely restricted airways. Almost every brachycephalic dog that ends up at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home ends up needing this same surgery to treat BOAS. Veterinarians have to cut a huge part of tissue out of the airways of these pups to help with the flow of air. These breathing problems are only getting worse as more breeders opt for breeding popular flat-faced pups.

The growing popularity of bulldogs is contributing to their constant breeding and the surge of these breeds in shelters. With the modern English Bulldog struggling to mate, breathe, and even walk it begs the question of why we keep creating these dogs. The answer is simple: because of demand. Stella a Frenchie from a breeder, immediately had issues when she was brought home. But, the breeder said, “It’s just Frenchies.” Even walking these pups, hurts them.
The breeding of bulldogs and French bulldogs presents a complex ethical dilemma that is only furthered by the health risks associated with their distinctive features. While these breeds are incredibly popular, the growing body of evidence detailing their susceptibility to chronic health issues cannot be ignored!
