Ice Cream Recall Affects 18,000 Tubs Due to Plastic Contamination

Nearly 18,000 tubs of ice cream and frozen yogurt from major brands Blue Bunny and Halo Top are being recalled over fears they may contain pieces of plastic. The Iowa-based manufacturer, Wells Enterprises, issued the voluntary recall after concerns surfaced that 22 of its 3-gallon tub products could pose a health risk if consumed. According to a report from the FDA, the recall affects products with “Best If Used By” dates ranging from March to October 2026.

The impacted items were shipped to 103 distribution centers across the U.S., including locations in Iowa, Michigan, Illinois, and Texas. Although no illnesses have been reported, the FDA has labeled this as a Class II recall—indicating that while the affected products are unlikely to cause serious health problems, they could still lead to temporary or reversible adverse health effects.

While most consumers don’t regularly purchase 3-gallon tubs (which are more common in food service), the issue underscores a broader concern about food safety and packaging. With plastic already polluting our oceans, waterways, and wildlife, the idea of it showing up inside our food is just another reminder of how pervasive this problem has become.

Wells Enterprises has not issued consumer-specific guidance in the FDA release but is encouraging people to contact them via a form on their website with any concerns.
