More than 730,000 pounds of frozen hash browns made by Lamb Weston  have been recalled after pieces of plastic were discovered in the popular breakfast item, according to a recent DailyMail.com report. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued the Class II recall, warning that the plastic fragments—ranging from one to eight millimeters in size—could pose a choking hazard or lead to internal injuries if ingested.

The recall affects shipments of Lamb Weston oval-shaped hash browns sent to Arizona and Hawaii, and distributed internationally to Japan, Kuwait, Taiwan, and the UAE. While the company insists the affected products were intercepted before reaching consumers, the scale of the recall raises broader concerns about food safety in large-scale industrial processing.

Lamb Weston, which supplies major fast food chains like McDonald’s, Taco Bell, and Burger King, stated the plastic was detected via X-ray screening. This isn’t the company’s first food safety issue. In 2022, over one million pounds of their Alexia Organic hash browns were recalled due to a listeria contamination. Prior recalls in 2018 and 2019 also involved foreign materials—specifically plastic—in their products.

Beyond food safety, Lamb Weston has also faced criticism for its working conditions. In a 2022 interview with More Perfect Union, employees described harsh labor practices and a disregard for worker health, with one whistleblower saying, “If I get sick, I get attitude. If I get hurt, I get punished.”

As convenience foods become more common in our daily diets, this incident is another reminder to scrutinize the origin and ethics behind what’s on our plates.

Let’s take this as a cue to Support food choices that are not just safer, but also kinder—to our health, to workers, and to the planet. Choosing whole, plant-based foods from trusted sources is a powerful step in the right direction.
