Coca-Cola is under fresh scrutiny following a report by Stand.earth that links the global beverage giant to fracking operations in the Permian Basin, Texas — a region widely regarded as one of the world’s most polluting oil and gas hubs. As reported by Yahoo, over 25 major brands, including Coca-Cola, Nestlé, Unilever, and Procter & Gamble, are indirectly fueling plastic production by sourcing ethane — a fracking byproduct — for packaging materials.
Fracking, short for hydraulic fracturing, is an extraction method that involves blasting a high-pressure mixture of water, sand, and chemicals into the earth to release oil and gas. Beyond its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, the method is notorious for contaminating local water supplies and triggering tremors. One particularly alarming consequence is the production of ethane, which is processed into plastic — a material that doesn’t biodegrade and breaks down into toxic microplastics.
Yvette Arellano, Environmental justice advocate and founder of Fenceline Watch, called out the irreversible harm tied to the practice, including developmental and reproductive health issues in communities near these operations.
Despite Coca-Cola’s commitment to its “World Without Waste” initiative, which aims to make all packaging recyclable and increase the use of recycled plastic to 35% by 2035, critics argue these efforts fall short. A study highlighted by Axios even suggests Coca-Cola contributes to over half of global plastic Pollution, casting doubt on the sincerity of their environmental pledges.
Until companies phase out fossil-fuel-based plastics, fracking will continue to thrive.
If we want to see real change, we need to Support brands that ditch plastic altogether. Choose products with minimal or no packaging, refill when you can, and always question claims of “sustainability” that don’t hold up under scrutiny. Let’s keep the pressure on companies to truly put the planet before profits.
