If you’ve picked up a 12-pack of Coca-Cola in Illinois or Wisconsin recently, it might be time to double-check the packaging. According to USA TODAY’s Gabe Hauari, over 10,000 cans of Coca-Cola Classic have been recalled due to possible plastic contamination.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued the recall earlier this month and has since classified it as a Class II recall. That means the affected product could potentially cause temporary or medically reversible health issues, although serious consequences are considered unlikely.
The recall involves 864 cases of 12-ounce can 12-packs, all bottled and distributed by Reyes Coca-Cola Bottling, LLC in Milwaukee. These products were sold across retail locations in Illinois and Wisconsin. The company stated that the batches are being pulled because they did not meet Coca-Cola’s quality standards—noting that nothing is more important than consumer safety.
No injuries or illnesses have been reported so far, and the FDA has not issued any consumer action guidelines, but the presence of plastic in beverages is certainly cause for concern. The exact product codes of the recalled items are listed on the FDA’s official recall website.
Contamination like this is yet another reminder of the potential risks associated with mass-produced packaged drinks. While big brands may take action after the fact, these incidents highlight the importance of transparency, quality control, and consumer awareness.
