If you’re trying to cut plastic out of your life, here’s one surprisingly easy trick: boil your water. According to a 2024 study published in Environmental Science & Technology Letters, a team of researchers from Guangzhou Medical University and Jinan University in China found that boiling tap water before filtering it can remove up to 90% of nano- and microplastics (NMPs).

That’s a big deal, considering that these tiny plastic particles are increasingly showing up in our food and water. We’re drinking them, eating them, and even breathing them in. The scientists behind the study—highlighted by David Nield for ScienceAlert on March 26, 2025—warn that these plastics could be impacting our health, potentially disrupting our gut microbiome and even our antibiotic resistance.

To test the method, researchers added extra plastic particles to both soft and hard tap water. Boiling the water caused calcium carbonate (the chalky stuff that leaves limescale in kettles) to form. This crust naturally trapped the plastic fragments. After boiling, a basic kitchen filter—like a mesh tea strainer—was enough to remove most of the plastic-laced buildup.

Interestingly, the method worked even better with hard water, which contains more minerals. In harder water samples, up to 90% of the plastic was captured. In softer water, results still reached around 25%—not perfect, but definitely better than nothing.

While drinking boiled water might feel old-school, this research suggests it could be one of the simplest ways to lower your daily plastic intake—without any fancy gadgets.

Let’s be honest: plastic is everywhere, and it’s not going away soon. But boiling your water is a small, actionable step anyone can take today. If you care about animals, the planet, and your own body, consider ditching the bottled stuff and making boiling part of your routine. Every choice counts—and this one couldn’t be easier.
