Microplastics are doing more than polluting oceans—they’re now disrupting one of Earth’s most essential processes: photosynthesis. According to a recent study published in PNAS, researchers found that microplastic contamination could reduce photosynthesis rates by as much as 18%, potentially slashing food production on a global scale.

The international research team used machine learning to analyze data from 157 previous studies. Their findings revealed that microplastics harm photosynthesis across various ecosystems, including land crops, freshwater algae, and marine algae. Terrestrial plant photosynthesis dropped by an average of 7.05%, while freshwater algae experienced up to an 18.25% decrease in chlorophyll a, a pigment critical to the photosynthetic process.

This reduction in photosynthesis could translate to an annual global loss of 110 to 361 million metric tons of crops, and between 1 and 24 million metric tons of seafood. These are staggering numbers with serious implications for food security, especially for communities already struggling with hunger and limited access to nutrient-rich foods.

The research is based on projections, some of which extrapolate small-scale experiments onto global systems. Still, the trend is clear: microplastics are silently damaging the planet’s ability to grow food and sustain ecosystems.

As the researchers point out, primary productivity—largely driven by photosynthesis—underpins not just food chains, but global ecological stability. The continued spread of plastic pollution threatens that foundation.

The good news? This study could be a turning point. With more awareness, there’s an opportunity to push for stronger bans on single-use plastics, Support plastic-free legislation, and adopt plant-based lifestyles that reduce demand on fragile food systems.

Let’s use this moment as a wake-up call. Refuse single-use plastics, Support bans, and choose plant-based options that leave a lighter footprint on the planet.
