A new study is raising major concerns about a plastic chemical found in common household products—and its link to hundreds of thousands of heart disease deaths worldwide. According to Best Life Online and reporting by Faye Brennan, researchers from NYU Langone Health have flagged the chemical di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) as a “tremendous danger to human health.”

DEHP is used to make plastic materials more flexible and is found in many everyday items—food containers, cosmetic packaging, toys, shampoos, and even medical devices. The study, published in eBioMedicine, analyzed data from over 200 global regions and linked DEHP exposure to approximately 356,000 cardiovascular deaths in 2018 alone. Alarmingly, 13.5% of heart disease deaths in people aged 55–64 were attributed to this single chemical.

South Asia and the Middle East experienced the highest death rates from DEHP exposure, with India recording over 100,000 deaths. The researchers warn that the widespread use of plastics—especially in regions undergoing rapid industrialization—may be directly worsening the global heart disease crisis.

While the study acknowledges limitations, including its use of regional estimates, the researchers stress that their findings add to a growing body of evidence that plastic chemicals are harmful to human health. Lead author Sara Hyman and senior author Dr. Leonardo Trasande both call for urgent global regulations to reduce DEHP exposure.

The good news? You can make a difference. By ditching single-use plastics and choosing reusable, toxin-free alternatives, you reduce not only your own risk but also the plastic Pollution harming our planet and its animals. Switch to glass food containers, skip plastic-packaged products, and say no to convenience that costs lives—both human and non-human.
