The question over whether nonhuman primates should be given habeas corpus rights has recently become a heated issue of debate. Despite the fact that we share between 80 and 90 percent of the same DNA with primates, many do not understand the value in affording these animals basic human rights. By allowing primates to have these rights, they would be protected from people who view them as property and keep them in captivity for their own entertainment. Some argue that allowing nonhuman primates to have rights is extreme or radical, but when you witness the intelligence of these animals in action, it suddenly seems that not doing so is the real extreme.
The monkey featured in this video proves the ability of primates to think and act like their human counterparts. These monkeys are at a train station in India and one was rendered unconscious after being electrocuted by the track wires. Rather than walking away and leaving his friend in harms way, this monkey swoops in and revives his friend, pulling him out of danger.
You have to wonder while watching this – wouldn’t you have done the same thing?
