Any animal lover would tell you that their dog is more than just a pet to them, they are family. We shower them with toys, love, yummy treats and would do anything to ensure their well-being. But sadly, not everyone thinks of dogs in this way.

This cruel fact is evident in the story of Cara, a terrified Greyhound. Back in July of 2015, PAWS Animal Rescue Ireland shared a video of Cara cowering in corner of the shelter. Despite her rescuer’s best efforts, Cara refused to look at anyone and instead stared at the wall. The heartbreaking video shows how psychologically scarred Cara was after suffering years of abuse.

PAWS Animal Rescue Ireland shared the video on Facebook, with the caption, “What made her like this?” Later, vets confirmed Cara was suffering from extreme nervousness and not a medical condition that can sometimes make dogs press their heads against walls.

But we have good news! Just seven months after Cara, now named Angel, refused to look at anyone, she was rehomed! She now lives with Michael and Theresa McGrath and is thriving in her new home!

Just one week after Angel was found, a second Greyhound was picked up from a similar location. PAWS said that it was evident by the way the two dogs greeted each other that they had both come from the same place and were even possibly brother and sister, given their age and coloring. Angel welcomed her brother, now named Cliff, and would cling beside him, staying cuddled up in her bed or only going where he would go.

Angel slowly began to open up, thanks to Cliff’s friendliness. In just one month, Angel allowed someone to touch her! And as you can see from the above video, Angel and Cliff love to have barking competitions. Angel looks like an entirely different dog in the second video and we are so thrilled for PAWS’ patience in helping this sweet girl come out of her shell. May Angel and Cliff have many more memories together!

Here in the U.S., pet homelessness has reached alarming numbers with about 70 million dogs and cats roaming the streets. Sadly, five out of every ten shelter dogs is put to sleep each year, which amounts to about 5,500 euthanized dogs every day. You can help end pet homelessness by volunteering at your local animal shelter. And please, always adopt and never shop!

  1. Greyhounds have good memories…I had a pair of littermates separated for almost 5 years. I had the sister and when I adopted the brother they knew each other immedietly and were inseparable for years until cancer claimed the sister….2 years later the brother died from it too.

  2. I adopted two greyhound girls that were raised together and then left at shelter. They were being fostered separately. When they were reunited at my house, they were overjoyed and had been incredibly close for the last 7.5 years. Unfortunately we had to euthanize the older one a couple of days ago and the younger one is clearly depressed. It is heartbreaking.

    1. Please tell her she will see her beloved friend and be reunited again one day. Dogs know our language and it may give her some comfort. Animals DO grieve!
