A heartbreaking new report sheds light on what happened to Gene Hackman’s beloved dogs in the wake of his and his wife’s passing. According to USA Today, the legendary actor, 95, and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 65, were found deceased in their Santa Fe home last week. Alongside them, authorities discovered one of their three dogs had died, raising concerns among animal lovers.
Initial police reports indicated that the deceased dog was a German shepherd, found in a crate near Arakawa. However, conflicting reports have since emerged. Joey Padilla, owner of Santa Fe Tails dog day care, clarified to USA Today that the deceased dog was actually Zinna, a 12-year-old Australian Kelpie mix known for her agility training. Zinna was deeply bonded to Arakawa and was reportedly found in her crate with the door closed.
The couple’s two surviving dogs, Bear, a German shepherd, and Nikita, an Akita-shepherd mix, are currently under Padilla’s care. Padilla, who had trained and cared for Hackman’s dogs for years, emphasized that Arakawa was a devoted pet parent, ensuring her animals had proper training, a healthy diet, and plenty of socialization.
Authorities have acknowledged possible misidentification of the deceased dog due to the deputies’ limited experience with canine breeds. Meanwhile, Padilla has asked for privacy as the surviving dogs adjust to life without their owners. He is currently awaiting further instructions regarding their future care.
The tragedy highlights the importance of ensuring pets have a secure future in case of unexpected events. If you have furry companions, now is the time to make arrangements for their well-being. Consider designating a trusted caretaker or including them in your estate planning—because, as this story reminds us, pets are family too.
