Amanda Pidruchney, 28, and her husband Darren, from Alberta, Canada, have received widespread praise for their efforts in rescuing and rehabilitating a German shepherd named Dorel. The couple, who thought they were helping a “responsible breeder” in distress, ended up taking in five dogs in desperate need of care after an unexpected tragedy shut down the breeder’s program.

Initially, Amanda and Darren intended to train the dogs for Schutzhund competitions, a sport known for testing a dog’s tracking, obedience, and protection skills. However, upon arriving at the breeder’s property, they were met with a grim reality. The dogs were in a state of severe neglect, and one, in particular, caught their attention: Dorel.

Dorel was in a heartbreaking condition. His paws were caked with dirt, his coat was rough, and he was visibly frightened. The once-proud German shepherd was on the brink of starvation and showed signs of severe trauma. Despite the overwhelming challenges, Amanda and Darren decided to take him in alongside his siblings.

Upon arrival at their home, Dorel’s health rapidly deteriorated. Their local vet struggled to diagnose his condition, which was compounded by various symptoms. Dorel’s situation became life-threatening, but Amanda and Darren refused to give up. They provided him with intensive care, and after five days in the ICU, Dorel began to recover.

Dorel’s remarkable turnaround has been celebrated widely after Amanda shared his story on TikTok. The video, posted on June 13, has garnered nearly 2 million views.
