According to NPR’s Michael Copley, the Trump administration’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is pushing to repeal its own authority to regulate climate pollution — a move that could wipe out all federal greenhouse gas standards. The proposal would undo the landmark 2009 endangerment finding, which concluded that greenhouse gases threaten public health and welfare. That finding has been the legal backbone of climate action in the U.S. for over a decade.
The administration argues Congress never explicitly gave the EPA the authority to regulate climate Pollution under the Clean Air Act. But environmental advocates and scientists warn that dismantling the finding ignores decades of scientific evidence linking fossil fuel emissions to worsening floods, fires, and deadly storms. Climate scientist Zeke Hausfather has criticized the proposal, saying it cherry-picks data to downplay risks.
Many companies — including utilities, oil and gas groups, and trade associations — actually Support a federal role in climate regulation. National standards give them legal protection against state lawsuits and provide predictability for long-term investments. Removing the EPA’s authority could trigger “chaos,” according to the Edison Electric Institute, by opening the door to a flood of lawsuits in state courts.
Communities across the U.S. are already facing the impacts of rising seas, stronger hurricanes, and extreme heat waves, all made worse by burning coal, oil, and gas. Weakening the EPA now would not only threaten public health but also strip away a key legal defense against polluters. Instead of rolling back protections, we should be strengthening them — and choosing cleaner, plant-based and sustainable lifestyles to cut demand for fossil fuels and protect the planet.
