Earth just experienced its second-warmest March on record, continuing an exceptionally warm start to the year. Global sea ice coverage also felt the heat, with the second-smallest extent since records began in 1979, according to scientists from NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI).
In March 2023, the average global land and ocean surface temperature was 2.23 degrees F (1.24 degrees C) above the 20th-century average, making it the second-warmest March in the 174-year global climate record. Asia had its second-warmest March on record, while South America and Africa each had their fourth-warmest. Europe experienced its 10th warmest March, and although North America had a warmer-than-average March, it did not rank among the top 20 warmest on record.
The 2023 year-to-date global surface temperature was the fourth warmest on record at 1.87 degrees F (1.04 degrees C) above the 20th-century average. NCEI’s Global Annual Temperature Outlook predicts that 2023 has a greater than 99% chance of ranking among the top 10 warmest years on record and a 96% chance of being among the top five warmest.
Polar sea ice coverage in March 2023 ranked as the second-smallest on record since 1979. Arctic sea ice was about 230,000 square miles below the 1991–2020 average, making it the sixth-smallest March extent in the 45-year record. Antarctic sea ice coverage was approximately 490,000 square miles below average, ranking as the second-smallest on record.
Although the tropics experienced a lower-than-average number of named tropical storms in March, one of them, Tropical Cyclone Freddy, set a record for the largest amount of accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) for any storm on record. ACE is a metric that indicates the amount of energy released by a tropical cyclone during its lifetime.
