Peggy, a stout Staffordshire bull terrier, and Molly, a magpie native to Australia became unlikely friends. Their unique bond, forged in unexpected circumstances, has captivated millions across social media platforms.

For four years, Peggy and Molly’s friendship thrived, documented through endearing photographs and heartfelt captions shared by their humans, Juliette Wells and Reece Mortensen. But recently, an emotional video surfaced, revealing the heartbreaking news of their separation. The reason? Molly’s illegal acquisition from the wild and subsequent cohabitation with Peggy drew complaints, leading to her surrender to the Department of Science and Innovation (DESI).

Outraged fans swiftly took to social media, decrying bureaucratic decisions overruling compassion and common sense. Arguments erupted, with supporters demanding the reunion of the inseparable duo. However, DESI defended its actions, emphasizing the welfare of wild animals and the necessity of adhering to regulations to prevent stress and disease transmission.

Renowned bird expert Darryl Jones underscored the intelligence and sociability of magpies, advocating for Molly’s return to familiar surroundings, saying “That animal now thinks it belongs to that family… It should go back to the people”.

Wells and Mortensen, recounting their rescue of Molly as a vulnerable chick, expressed their commitment to nurturing her for eventual release into the wild—a plan thwarted by Molly’s unexpected bond with Peggy. Wildlife officials feared a precedent encouraging the domestication of wild animals for online profit, while advocates championed the autonomy of Molly, questioning why she couldn’t choose her companionship.

As petitions circulate and debates rage on, the fate of Molly hangs in the balance. Wildlife Rescue Australia echoes concerns about the appropriateness of wild animals as pets, stressing the importance of understanding their unique needs. DESI, tasked with ensuring Molly’s welfare, navigates a complex landscape, considering options within legal confines while prioritizing her care.
