Around the world, animal shelters are reaching capacity. This means that they often cannot accept new surrenders since they do not have the space or ability to care for them. Heartbreakingly, this has led to an increase in animals being abandoned. One sweet dog named Malea highlights this sad trend.
Malea was found abandoned in a dumpster by rescuers from Stray Rescue of St. Louis. The Missouri-based rescue had received a call from a passerby who had seen Malea being placed in the dumpster by a human, assumed to be her previous caretaker.
The rescue responded quickly, retrieving Malea from the dumpster. They were surprised to find the dog in good health, considering that temperatures in the dumpster were quite high. The lid of the dumpster was closed when the team found the sweet dog. In a video of the rescue, a person can be seen opening the lid before climbing inside to help retrieve Malea.
It is unknown why Malea was dumped in this cruel manner. However, she is a gentle and sweet dog who appears to trust humans and to get along well with other dogs. Since the Stray Rescue of St. Louis’s shelter is full, they are seeking a foster who will be able to care for Malea until she finds a loving forever family.
Malea’s case highlights the urgent need for foster homes to help care for animals. Fostering a dog or cat can free up shelter space, allowing other animals to be saved. Additionally, foster homes provide better environments for animals. They can also help animals adjust to living in a home and learn skills that may help make them more adoptable.
