A shocking trend has emerged in the UK, where children, some as young as primary school age, are using handheld catapults, or slingshots, to torture and kill animals. Reports reveal that these youngsters are part of a widespread network on WhatsApp, where they share footage and photos of their gruesome acts.
In these distressing videos, animals are seen suffering slow deaths after being shot with catapults. Even more horrifying, some children kick and abuse the wounded animals, posing with their lifeless bodies as trophies. Sky News investigation has uncovered nearly 500 members across 11 WhatsApp groups dedicated to catapult activities, sharing over 350 photos and videos of animal cruelty.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) has condemned this behavior as “horrendous” and highlighted it as an “emerging trend.” Various animals, including pigs, deer, pigeons, foxes, squirrels, and more, have fallen victim to these horrific acts. The injuries inflicted are often severe, leading to excruciating suffering and, in some cases, death. Volunteers at organizations like The Swan Sanctuary have witnessed the devastating impact firsthand. Birds with catapult injuries suffer fractures, shattered bones, and internal injuries caused by ball bearings shot from the catapults. These injuries are not only painful but often fatal, leaving volunteers emotionally distraught.
The rise of these sickening attacks has prompted calls for legislative action. While catapults are legal to buy and carry, there are growing demands for stricter regulations, especially concerning their use in animal cruelty. Currently, laws like the Animal Welfare Act 2006 and the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 offer some protection to animals, but they fall short in addressing the specific issue of catapult abuse.
Geoff Edmond, lead wildlife officer at the RSPCA, has emphasized the need for criminal sanctions against those deliberately targeting animals for sport. Lawmakers, including Henry Smith, are urging the government to consider measures such as restricting sales to minors and imposing severe penalties on offenders.
Furthermore, online platforms like WhatsApp are under scrutiny for allowing such content to proliferate. While WhatsApp has stated that sharing such material violates its terms of use, there’s a call for stronger enforcement and cooperation with law enforcement agencies to tackle this issue effectively. The rise of children using catapults to torture and kill animals is a disturbing trend that demands immediate action. It is not only a matter of animal welfare but also reflects broader societal issues that need to be addressed.
