The monthly beach cleanups organized by Pier 2 Pier Beach Cleans in Brighton, England are not your typical events. Each cleanup serves as a wonderful example of people teaming up to clean the shore from the dangerous waste that can pollute the environment and threaten wildlife. But, if you see the participants, you will notice that they all have headphones on and are swaying to the same rhythm on the sandy dance floor – since the cleanup is also … a silent disco.

Pier 2 Pier Beach Cleans is supported by Brighton & Hove City Council’s #StreetsAhead campaign and hosts mass Silent Disco Cleans every month on Brighton beach.

In 2017, the organization successfully removed more than 1,700 pounds of litter from the area. They also hold events like Beach Clean Bingo and the Mermaid Beach Clean.

The next event organized by the group is a Halloween Silent Disco Clean on October 28, 2018.

Pier 2 Pier Beach Clean events have also inspired the group Eco Active to hold a similar cleanup in St. Helier, Jersey, ITV reports. Apart from the silent disco, an “Introduction to Mindfulness” meditation session was also scheduled to take place there.

Plastic waste kills more than a million seabirds and over 100,000 marine mammals every year. A piece of plastic lying on the beach may seem like nothing much to us, but to those animals, it can be fatal! It is so great to see this organization and others making cleanups fun and getting whole communities involved!
