Controversial Pigeon Cull in Germany Sparks Debate

Campaigners are expressing outrage over Limburg, Germany’s decision to enlist a falconer to cull the town’s pigeon population. This drastic measure was approved by a slim majority in a recent referendum.

Pigeons, which have coexisted with humans for millennia, often evoke mixed feelings. While some people enjoy their presence and even feed them, others see them as a nuisance. This tension came to a head in Limburg when the city council initially decided to exterminate around 700 pigeons last November. This decision led to a referendum held on June 9, coinciding with the EU election.

With just over 53% of residents voting in favor, the controversial cull is set to proceed. Mayor Marius Hahn confirmed that a falconer would carry out the task by luring the pigeons into traps, stunning them with a wooden stick, and then breaking their necks.

Animal rights activists are appalled by the method. “We live in 2023, it can’t be that we kill animals just because they annoy us, or they’re a nuisance. That’s not acceptable,” stated Tanya Muller, Limburg’s pigeon project manager.

Critics argue that culling is both cruel and ineffective. Historical data supports their concerns; for instance, Basel, Switzerland, which conducted massive culls over several decades, saw its pigeon population remain stable. Instead, Basel’s pigeon population was significantly reduced only after implementing the ‘Basel model,’ which involved public education against feeding pigeons and installing pigeon lofts to manage egg removal. Similar humane strategies have been adopted in Augsburg and other German cities, achieving better control over pigeon populations without resorting to lethal measures.

In contrast, the UK has tried using birds of prey to control pigeon numbers, but this approach often leads to messy carcasses in public spaces and has sparked its own controversies. Additionally, legal opinions in places like Berlin suggest that feeding bans do not effectively reduce pigeon populations but rather lead to the birds’ malnourishment and slow death from starvation.
