As another school year begins, it’s the perfect time to discuss a cruel and unnecessary practice that still exists in many schools across the nation: animal dissection. According to data collected by PETA, an estimated 20 million animals are used annually in classrooms throughout the U.S. for “educational purposes.”

Among the creatures mutilated in the name of “learning” are frogs, mice, pigs, and — perhaps most shockingly — cats. Yes, you read that correctly: The exact furry felines that many of us keep in our homes and cherish as pets are a common subject of brutal biology class experiments.

As more and more people have begun realizing how disturbing animal dissection truly is, many U.S. states have begun giving students the choice to opt not to participate in the archaic practice. Further, advances in technology have allowed for the creation of viable alternatives to physical dissection, such as digital simulation programs and 3-D models. These options allow kids to learn about animal anatomy without requiring innocent creatures to be killed.

However, unfortunately, many schools have yet to embrace these cruelty-free alternatives and are still requiring kids to engage in this traumatizing practice. In this way, these learning institutions are perpetuating the horrific abuse inflicted on animals by biological supply companies, many of which take cats from pet stores, shelters or the streets, lock them in cages, and subject them to torturous treatment before finally ending their lives and selling them to schools.

And it’s not just the animal subjects who are negatively affected by the continuation of dissection lessons; the practice can also have consequences for young, impressionable students, who may think that mutilating the bodies of animals is normal and okay after doing so in the classroom. And considering the well-documented connection between animal abuse and violence against people, animal dissection may normalize behaviors that can in turn endanger society as a whole.

If you agree that it’s far past time we do away with the dissection of cats and other precious creatures in U.S. schools, please make your voice heard by signing this Care2 petition demanding this disgusting practice be outlawed nationwide!

And while you’re at it, don’t forget to SHARE what you’ve learned here with all the animal lovers you know! Many people are still unaware of the dark truth about animal dissection, and we need to spread awareness in order to help make this antiquated practice a thing of the past!

  1. To what extent does the dissection of animals today teach kids to be cruel to animals tomorrow? If life is not that important, why bother? Now, teachers can have all the necessary documents to show the insside of an animal without dissecting any. If I had had to dissect an animal when I was at school, I think I would have fainted.
The students you\’re talking about don\’t intend to become vets, do they? Why force them to dissect?
