Cases and Hospitalizations Continue to Rise in the United States

In October, 11 states reported their highest single day of new coronavirus deaths since the pandemic began. Many states face increased hospitalizations as well. Until a vaccine is available, masks and personal responsibility is the best way to save lives.

29 states set new records in October for most new daily cases. “If we continue our current behavior, by the time we start to go down the other side of the curve, a half a million people will be dead,” said CNN medical analyst Dr. Jonathan Reiner, a professor of medicine at George Washington University.

“We’re not in a good place,” Dr. Anthony Fauci said during a virtual Q&A session. “Now we’re averaging about 70,000 a (day). That’s a bad position to be in.” As cases increase, hospitalizations will rise. October 30 set the record for the day with the highest number of new infections with over 97,000 recorded coronavirus infections. There are currently around 48,000 people hospitalized.

Other experts echoed Fauci’s concern,” We’re rising quickly. If we just go back about six, seven weeks ago to Labor Day, we were at about 35,000 cases a day,” said Dr. Ashish Jha, dean of Brown University School of Public Health. “I would not be surprised if we end up getting to 100,000” new cases a day, Jha shared.

Masks are key to stopping the spread and rising cases. “If you don’t want to shut down, at least do the fundamental basic things, which are really the flagship of which is wearing a mask,” Fauci said. “We can’t have this very inconsistent wearing that you see, where you see some states that absolutely refuse to wear a mask. “It almost becomes a political statement. We’ve got to get away from that,” he said.

With current conditions, the daily death toll in the United States could reach 2,000 by January 1, per the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation.
