Cats come in many different shapes and sizes and with many different temperaments. However, generally, people think of cats as independent. This can make it seem as though cats will be okay if they are left home alone. A cat expert explains why this is not a good idea.
Stephen Quandt is a cat trainer who has been certified by the Animal Behavior Institute. In a statement to Newsweek, he explained that the length of time a cat can be left home alone depends on the individual cat.
Truly independent cats may be able to be left home alone for up to two days, provided a cat sitter provides food, water, and other necessities. Food should be delivered at the same time as the feline’s normal meals. However, cats should not be left home alone for more than three days. Additionally, Quandt warns against leaving sick cats, senior cats, or kittens home alone.
For those who cannot find a cat sitter, an automated feeder with a timer and a circulating water dispenser can help make sure felines receive adequate nutrition and hydration. To ensure that cats will use these devices, it is crucial to introduce them before leaving.
