In a major win for animal welfare, California has officially banned the painful and unnecessary practice of cat declawing. Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 867 into law this week, ending a procedure that animal rights groups have long criticized as cruel and outdated. The bill, introduced by Assemblymember Alex Lee, makes it illegal for veterinarians in the state to declaw cats unless it’s medically necessary.

Declawing isn’t just a quick nail trim—it’s a surgical procedure that amputates part of a cat’s toes. Often done to prevent cats from scratching furniture or people, it can result in chronic pain, behavioral changes, and long-term health issues like back pain and mobility problems. According to SFGATE, Lee compared the practice to removing a person’s fingers at the top knuckle and called it “barbaric.”

Animal lovers have long called for a ban, arguing that declawing violates basic ethical standards of animal care. Several California cities—including Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Berkeley—had already enacted local bans, and New York became the first state to outlaw it back in 2019. Now, California joins them at the state level, reinforcing a growing trend of prioritizing animal welfare over human convenience.

The California Veterinary Medical Association opposed the bill, claiming it sets a “dangerous precedent” for medical professionals. But that argument fell flat in the face of widespread Support from the public and advocacy groups who say our relationship with animals should be based on respect—not mutilation.

As more people embrace vegan and plant-based values, legislation like this shows a shift in how we view animals—not as property, but as sentient beings deserving of compassion. It’s a small but powerful step toward a kinder world.
