Maru, the Scottish Fold cat who became an internet legend for squeezing into impossibly small boxes, has passed away at the age of 18. According to People, Maru’s family shared the news on his YouTube channel, revealing he died after being diagnosed with lung cancer. His owner described him as a laid-back soul who always found joy in surprising people.

Maru rose to global fame in 2016 when Guinness World Records recognized him as the most viewed animal on YouTube, with more than 325 million views at the time. Fans around the world tuned in to watch him nap, leap into cardboard boxes, or don costumes on his channel, Mugumogu. Today, his videos have racked up more than 577 million views, proving just how much one quirky cat could brighten the lives of millions.

The love for Maru wasn’t just about funny clips. His popularity revealed the universal bond between humans and animals, reminding us how much joy and comfort they bring. From simple moments like watching a cat curl up in a box to bigger movements like adopting plant-based habits for the health of animals and the Earth, our connections with other species matter deeply.

Tributes poured in from fans who called Maru their “first internet cat” and thanked him for years of smiles. At 18, roughly 88 in human years, Maru lived a long, full life. His passing highlights how pets can shape our daily routines, mental health, and even inspire global communities built on kindness.

Maru’s story is a reminder that caring for animals—whether famous internet stars or shelter pets waiting for homes—enriches both their lives and ours. Choosing compassion, whether through adoption, plant-based choices, or simply respecting the animals we share the planet with, is a legacy worth carrying forward.

Let’s honor Maru by celebrating the joy animals bring and making choices that protect them and the environment.
