When 66-year-old Chiara Adorno left California for France last October, she wasn’t just chasing a new chapter—she was looking for freedom. According to CNN Travel, Adorno gave away most of her possessions, bought an extra airline seat for her two beloved cats, Willy and Puccini, and set off for a slower, more fulfilling life in Europe.

Her journey took her through small villages, historic towns, and coastal escapes across southern France. Tragedy struck when Willy, who suffered from asthma, died shortly after their arrival. Despite her heartbreak, Adorno continued her travels with Puccini, eventually finding comfort and inspiration in the vibrant port city of Marseille.

Adorno says she feels deeply at home in France, where social interactions aren’t dominated by career talk or smartphones. She revels in simple pleasures like painting watercolors, strolling the beaches, and hiking the Calanques. Compared to the U.S., where she often felt trapped in a “work, work, work” cycle and worried about medical debt, she praises the French healthcare system as treating her like “a Fabergé egg.”

Her move reflects more than just a personal escape—it highlights a growing desire among Americans to prioritize quality of life over relentless productivity. In France, Adorno feels valued as a human being first, not for her output. She admits that navigating French bureaucracy hasn’t been easy, but the trade-off has been worth it. “As a retired person, as somebody who wants to just enjoy life, I couldn’t have picked better,” she says.

With Puccini still at her side and Marseille as her likely permanent home, Adorno’s story shows that it’s never too late to start over. Sometimes, fulfillment means stepping away from the grind, listening to your heart, and building a life where you and your pets can thrive together.
