In Brooklyn, New York, a growing dispute between residents and a local concrete plant, DKN Ready Mix, has sparked concerns over environmental Pollution and community health. Since the plant’s establishment nearly a year ago in Greenpoint, residents have reported several issues, including respiratory problems, eye irritation, and excessive noise. These complaints have escalated as community members notice physical damage to their properties and significant amounts of cement dust accumulating in the area.

Brooklyn Councilmember Lincoln Restler and other local leaders have voiced their concerns, emphasizing the negative impact of the plant on the neighborhood. The presence of the plant near residential areas and its proximity to Newtown Creek, a polluted waterway awaiting federal Superfund cleanup, further complicates the situation.
Community groups like North Brooklyn Neighbors have responded by installing air quality monitors. Recent data from these monitors indicated Pollution levels surpassing those recorded during last year’s wildfires, described by Lael Goodman, Environmental justice Program Manager at the organization, as some of the worst in decades for New York City.
In response to the outcry, city and state officials have taken action. The New York City Department of Environmental Protection issued a violation against DKN Ready Mix for excessive dust this summer. Subsequent inspections showed improvements, such as the installation of sprinklers and sidewalk cleanups by the plant. However, concerns persist among residents and elected officials who accuse the company of neglecting its duties as a community member.
Despite some compliance by DKN Ready Mix, the tension between business operations and community well-being remains a contentious issue. The ongoing struggle highlights a broader narrative of environmental justice, particularly in areas historically burdened by industrial Pollution.
