Doctors Ask UK Residents to Phase Out Wood Burners for Children’s Health

Leading pediatricians are urging the phasing out of wood burners in urban family homes to safeguard children’s health. The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) has released a new position statement advocating for stronger government measures to address air pollution, a pressing public health issue.

One of the primary recommendations from the RCPCH is to eliminate domestic wood burning in urban areas. They propose assistance for rural residents to transition away from wood as a primary heating source, along with Support for families facing fuel poverty through cost assistance.

To further protect children, the RCPCH emphasizes the need for continuous monitoring of air quality around schools and empowering local councils to take action when Pollution levels exceed safe limits. The organization is also calling for the implementation of Ella’s Law, named after Ella Roberta Adoo-Kissi-Debrah, who tragically passed away at the age of nine due to asthma exacerbated by air Pollution in London. She was the first person in England to have air Pollution identified as a cause of death by a coroner.

In addition, the RCPCH is advocating for Awaab’s Law, designed to shield private renters from hazardous living conditions like dampness and mold, conditions that contributed to the death of two-year-old Awaab Ishak in 2020. Dr. Mike McKean, the RCPCH’s vice president for policy, highlighted the alarming rise of air Pollution as a leading contributor to global disease, now surpassing high blood pressure and smoking. He noted that exposure to polluted air can stunt lung development in children, potentially leading to severe health issues in adulthood.

Dr. Emily Parker, a clinical fellow at the RCPCH, shared her firsthand experiences of treating children affected by air Pollution in emergency care. She stressed the necessity for national action to address the primary sources of harmful pollutants like PM2.5 and nitrogen dioxide, which pose significant risks to children’s health.

The RCPCH points out that current air Pollution limits in the UK are alarmingly high—often up to four times the World Health Organization’s recommended guidelines. They emphasize the urgent need for a government plan to lower these levels, particularly as children are uniquely vulnerable due to their higher respiratory rates and proximity to ground-level pollutants.
