Scientists estimate that between 700,000 and one million marine species live in the world’s oceans, and only around one-third of these species have even been named or identified. So when they say that there are plenty fish in the sea … they really weren’t joking. At around 0.45 seconds in this video, a newly discovered species called the giant calamari appears. Seeing this amazing creature that we just discovered existed is a truly incredible experience.
But the sad reality is that while there are still so many more creatures to discover, we stand to lose them before we even get to know them. Our oceans are in a state of imminent collapse largely due to human actions. Between the 8.8 million tons of plastic trash that we dump into the oceans every year, overfishing (which has depleted around 80 percent of the world’s fish stocks), the warming ocean temperatures symptomatic of Climate change – the oceans are dying. And in the words of Captain Paul Watson, “if the oceans die, we die.”
The good news is there are many things we can all do to help marine species (and ourselves) survive – check out this article to learn how your consumption habits can benefit fish.
