According to a memo published by Bill Gates this week, the world may be prioritizing the wrong climate goals. The Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist argued that humanity’s survival isn’t at risk from Climate change, and that global efforts should make a “strategic pivot” away from slashing emissions toward fighting poverty and disease.

“The doomsday outlook is causing much of the climate community to focus too much on near-term emissions goals,” Gates wrote, suggesting that global resources might be better spent improving quality of life in a warming world. His 17-page memo arrived just days before world leaders meet at the United Nations climate conference in Brazil, ensuring his remarks would spark debate.

Gates, who founded Breakthrough Energy to speed up clean energy innovation, emphasized that the planet’s most urgent problems—especially for the world’s poorest—remain poverty, hunger, and disease. “Although Climate change will hurt poor people more than anyone else, for the vast majority of them it will not be the only or even the biggest threat,” he said.

Climate experts, however, warn that such a shift risks underestimating the scale of the climate crisis. Stanford climate scientist Chris Field told the Associated Press that investment doesn’t need to be an “either/or” choice. “We should also invest for both the long term and the short term,” he said, noting that sustainable human development depends on addressing both carbon emissions and social inequality.

For advocates of a healthy environment, the real takeaway is balance. Fighting poverty and disease is essential—but so is protecting the Earth that sustains us all. Supporting renewable energy, reducing meat consumption, and choosing plant-based options are still among the most direct ways individuals can help both people and animals thrive.

If we want a livable future, let’s work toward one that’s healthy for humans, animals, and the environment alike.
