In an unusual incident that has captured the attention of social media users across mainland China, a fifth-floor household in Sichuan province’s residential building took urban farming to the next level by keeping cows on their balcony. Video clips of seven calves eating on the elevated balcony quickly went viral on Douyin (the Chinese version of TikTok), garnering over 4 million views.
The residential compound in southwest China houses people who were resettled from nearby villages, which may help explain the unique situation. According to reports, the cattle were only on the premises for a day before the neighbors, disturbed by the constant mooing and foul smell, alerted the authorities. On July 14, urban management officials stepped in and removed the animals from the premises.
The community’s party secretary, Zhang Dayou, disclosed that the calves each weighed between 10 and 20 kilograms. However, the story didn’t end there, as the property management staff and guards have since been engaged in a battle of wills with the owner of the cows, who attempted to sneak them back into the flat after their removal.
The incident has sparked widespread discussion and reactions on social media platforms, with online observers expressing shock and amusement at the bovine balcony story. While some found the incident humorous, others sympathized with the villagers who had to abandon their traditional rural way of life after being resettled in the city. Of course, the real victims are the cows.
A resident had previously complained about noisy chickens being raised in flats, but keeping cattle in an urban environment was an entirely different matter. However, many social media users showed understanding towards the villagers, acknowledging the challenge of adjusting to an urban lifestyle after generations of living in the countryside.
