A new wave of PFAS testing is raising eyebrows across the country, especially among people who reach for a warm cup of green or chamomile tea for comfort or health. According to Mamavation, which partnered with Environmental Health News to run EPA certified lab tests, many popular teas contain detectable levels of PFAS that can impact long term health and the environment.
These forever chemicals are linked to serious issues like reduced immunity, higher cholesterol, disrupted thyroid function, and increased risk of certain cancers. PFAS are designed to resist heat and water which means they linger in soil, water, food, and our bodies. For people trying to live a more plant based life or protect the earth through everyday choices, finding out that a soothing evening tea might carry toxic baggage is frustrating.
Mamavation found that contamination depends heavily on the type of tea and brand. Earl Grey appeared to fare the worst with ninety one percent of samples containing PFAS and one quarter showing quantifiable levels. Chamomile and green tea were not far behind. Studies published in recent years back this up. Research from 2023 and 2021 showed PFAS in tea bags from India and in Japanese teas. Another paper from 2020 linked coffee and tea consumption with higher PFAS levels in blood. These studies, including a 2022 investigation into bubble tea, underscore how widespread the issue has become.
The good news is that some brands performed far better, showing either extremely tiny traces or none at all. Celestial Seasonings Chamomile, From Great Origins chamomile and green teas, Harney and Sons Japanese Sencha, Numi Gunpowder Green, and several blends from Rishi and TAZO ranked among the cleanest options. Many of these teas avoid PFAS both in the leaves and in the bags which is promising for anyone seeking a healthier routine.
Choosing products that align with your values is a powerful way to Support your own wellness and the planet. If you want to limit exposure to forever chemicals, look for brands that prioritize transparency and continue exploring plant based alternatives that nourish both your body and the environment.
