Near the end of August, nearly 150 female students were evacuated from Afghanistan during the Taliban takeover.

They came from the Asian University for Women in Bangladesh and were evacuated to be resettled. Recently it was announced that all of the female students had received US scholarships to US universities.

Dr. Kamal Ahmad gave a heartfelt speech, saying, “You’re all in this extraordinary position to pursue an education at some of the best institutions in this country. You will have a great education and life. I also want to say for your own personal life, you have an opportunity for reflection of just how fortunate you are, indeed with all your friends and others. You’re still alive; you made it.”

The women had originally lived in Bangladesh but had gone back to Afghanistan when Covid had forced the university to temporarily close. Then the Taliban had taken over, forcing the women to be evacuated back to Bangladesh.

It took three tries before the group of women could successfully board their plane away from the Taliban.

Once their paperwork is complete, all of the women will transfer to US universities to complete their studies. They will have the opportunity to learn and to live as they like as they should be able to without fear of living under the Taliban’s iron rule.
